LEE Hyein has long worked primarily through plein-air painting, inscribing placeness, along with her own body and time, onto the pictorial surface. In 7 Stages, she steps away from painting landscapes through direct observation and instead turns her attention to the medium of painting itself, which has hitherto mediated between the artist and her subject. Place is thus translated into scenes shaped by memories and experiences accumulated in the body, becoming a choreographic stage that generates its own rhythmic sense of place.
